Robertson should return surplus to taxpayers

A surplus of more than $5.2 billion in the eleven months to May shows the Government is overtaxing hardworking New Zealanders, according to ACT Leader David Seymour.

“Grant Robertson boasts about being fiscally responsible by ‘running sustainable surpluses’. ACT takes a different view.

“A government surplus is a taxpayer deficit. It means the Government is overtaxing New Zealanders – taking more than it delivers in return.

“Jacinda Ardern and Grant Robertson will tell New Zealanders that they need these surpluses to build up our social services.

“The Government already spends about $17,000 for every man, woman, and child in New Zealand.

“There is plenty of fat to cut, and efficiencies to be gained, by doing things differently.

“For example, we could cut corporate welfare, raise the retirement age, and reverse middle-class welfare programmes like Fees-Free.

“The argument we can build a better society if the Government takes just a little bit more of taxpayers’ money is a fantasy.

“Grant Robertson should stop crowing about overtaxing Kiwis and give the money back to its rightful owners”, says Mr Seymour.
